Children and Young People with Diabetes
Think ‘Diabetes First’ if your child is unwell!
We know that coping with diabetes isn’t always easy. But we’re here to help you.
We’re part of a teaching hospital with state-of-the-art facilities and an award-winning team consisting of specialist doctors, specialist nurses, dieticians, a psychologist and support workers.
Our service helps children and young people (up to 18 years) with type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and maturity onset diabetes in the young.
- We support children and young people with multiple daily insulin injections
- We are a regional centre for insulin pump therapy (a more flexible alternative to injections for some)
- We run a children’s clinic, adolescent clinic, transition clinic, dietetic clinic and a high HbA1c clinic
- We provide integrated specialist psychological support to all young people.
- We provide a range of activities to enable children and young people with diabetes to meet their peers, these include: an annual residential holiday to Peat Rigg (Yorkshire Moors), a sports day and a fun day for children under seven years old.
Above all, we’re here to deliver a high quality diabetes service that aims to maximise the health and wellbeing of children, young people and their families.
There may be times when your child will suffer from usual childhood illnesses such as cold/flu, diarrhoea and vomiting and sore throats. While all of these can be safely treated by a GP, we wanted to take this opportunity to remind you to consider the impact any of these illnesses may have on a child with diabetes.
