The Education Health and Care Plan Process

The Education Health and Care Plan Process

Here you will find out about the step by step process if you or your school are considering applying for an  Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

  1. Education Health and Care Plans - what are they and does my child need one?

Sometimes a child or young person requires a level of support that is more intensive than the resources usually available in their school for SEN Support. In such a case, you or your child's school could consider asking the Local Authority to undertake an Education, Health and Care needs assessment which could lead to your child receiving an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP).

  2. What is an Education Health and Care Plan and how can they help my child?

For most children, all schools have resources that can support them. In Redcar and Cleveland,  schools can implement a SEND Support Plan or, for children with more complex needs, a SEND Support Plan Plus to help make a long-term plan of action for your child.

  3. How to request an Education Health and Care Plan Needs Assessment

Here you will find information about how to request an EHCP.

  4. Deciding if an EHC needs assessment is appropriate (weeks 1 to 6)

Once the council receives a request for an EHC needs assessment, the local authority have up to 6 weeks to decide whether to carry out an assessment.

  5. Continuing the EHC Needs assessment (weeks 6 to 16)

If the local authority decides to proceed, they will gather more information and advice from people who work with your child, including health and social care professionals.

  6. If it's agreed that an EHCP is necessary (weeks 16-20)

If the local authority decide to issue an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), they will send a a draft plan to you, along with all reports collected during the assessment process.

  7. Mediation and Tribunal - Disagreeing with a decision

Information about procedures if you disagree with a decision made my multi-agency education health and care panel from mediation or to prepare for tribunal.
