Transition between phases of education

Here you will find guidance on transition.

Transition Programme for Year 6 to Year 7

Transition is extremely important whether it is to a new school, a new key stage or even to a new classroom. In Redcar and Cleveland, we ask primary school to work with our secondary academies to ensure that there is good information sharing about all of our children moving into the next phase of their education - this will hopefully lead to a smooth transition.

For some children, this is a very exciting time and they cannot wait to move on to a new school and make new friends. For some children and their families, especially those with additional needs, it can be a very worrying time. Primary schools share information about all the children moving into year 7 with the receiving secondary school from Spring term in year 6. SENDCo's from both schools will speak with each other regularly and update on any children that may be more vulnerable and/or may need a higher level of support. Some children may need a more bespoke transition - this may involve our Educational Psychologist Service or advisory teachers in the Specialist Teaching Service. If this is needed, school should discuss this with parents and then will request this support from the Local Authority.
