Turning Tides

A community-based wellbeing coach is available through Turning Tides for young people aged between 15-21. Support is targeted at young people who are facing a transition in their lives, feeling lost and confused about their future and struggle to express their emotions/may be lonely.
How it can help

The service is led by and designed around the young persons needs. We want to hear from them in their referral what they want support for and what they see as their challenges. This empowers young people to start to think independently and explore the agency of the choices in their lives.

The coach will work through a My Mind Star (see picture) with the young person, identifying the goals they would like to achieve, and steps needed to reach their goals. This star has been adapted to be more interactive in how it is completed and alternative more accessible wording of areas. Support is offered on a long-term basis to reflect that some people take longer to open up or to even articulate what they see as the areas they want to improve in their lives. We know some young people may need more hand holding in certain areas and coaches are able to come alongside young people where they are initially overwhelmed. The design of coaching is so that the coach can do for, do with, stand back and cheer on the young persons achievements, always supporting to empower in an asset-based way. We want young people to see what they uniquely offer by just being them. To apply for to Turning Tides, please contact enquiries@turning-tides.org.

Our coaches are youth work trained and so are not best placed to support:

  • Young people in crisis, unable to keep themselves safe, those who pose an immediate risk to themselves or to others.
  • Young people experiencing symptoms of psychosis where the psychosis is central to the presenting issue.
  • Those under Care Coordination within Secondary Care Services for a mental disorder such as anxiety or depression.
  • Young people who are currently an in-patient in hospital receiving treatment for their mental health.
